Description:
Carica papaya trees were initially cultivated in Central America, in what is now present-day Mexico. These trees are generally fast-growing when given nutrient-rich, well-draining soil along with sufficient sunlight and water, reaching maturity approximately a year after planting. Once mature, they can produce fruit for several years, with peak production occurring in the second and third years.
Phytochemistry:
Seeds of Carica papaya have been discovered to contain a compound known as benzyl isothiocyanate (BITC). Initial studies examining the effects of BITC on cancerous pancreatic tissue indicate that it effectively inhibits tumor cells in vitro. This suggests a potential new chemical framework for the development of future cancer therapies.
